Why Plaza de Colón is a must-see in Madrid

Plaza de Colón is one of the major open spaces in central Madrid. It is a strategic hub where Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo de la Castellana, Génova, Serrano and Goya meet. Beyond its historical value, it brings together urban icons and cultural programming throughout the year.

Where it is and what surrounds it

The square is bordered by Serrano, Goya, Jorge Juan, Castellana and Recoletos. Around it stand landmark buildings and major museums. On key dates such as Christmas or Pride, Colón becomes one of the city’s main stages.

Monuments and places to see in Plaza de Colón

  • Monument to Christopher Columbus. It stands at the centre of the square above a fountain. A Neo-Gothic white marble sculpture 17 m high (including pedestal), created by Jerónimo Suñol (1885).
  • Discovery Gardens. A 1970 park housing the Monument to the Discovery of America: three large concrete volumes with reliefs and inscriptions. Beneath the gardens is the Fernán Gómez – Cultural Centre of the Villa.
  • Colón Towers. A pair of skyscrapers (1967–1976) famous for being built “from top to bottom”. Notable for their garnet glass panels and green top structure; currently undergoing modernisation.
  • Large Spanish flag. Measuring 21 × 14 m and flying from a 50 m mast, it is visible from many points along the Recoletos–Castellana axis.
  • National Archaeological Museum (MAN). Just steps away from the square, with masterpieces such as the Lady of Elche — a perfect plan to blend culture with a walk along Recoletos.

Brief history and civic life

The square is dedicated to the discoverer of America and has hosted historical celebrations and demonstrations. Its layout and monumentality make it a civic space where memory, art and city life coexist. With the opening of the Discovery Gardens and the underground cultural centre, Colón added theatre, exhibitions and open-air events.

Living near Colón: art, shopping and mobility

The Colón area — between Recoletos, the Castellana and Serrano — concentrates galleries, boutiques, hotels and gastronomy. It is a prime area with excellent mobility and services. Renovated stately apartments, penthouses with terraces and residences with concierge and garage are the most sought-after property types.
